What is Jute?

Jute, also known as jute or corcoro, is a vegetable textile fiber obtained from the stem of the Eorchorus ccipsu / ciris, an annual herbaceous plant of the lime family.

This plant, which can reach 3-4 meters in height, has a few centimeters large stem and large oval leaves. For centuries it has been cultivated in the hot and humid climate regions of the Indian sub-continent - especially Bangladesh and Pakistan - of China and Southeast Asia.

Jute is one of the cheapest natural fibers, and is second only to cotton in quantity produced and in diversification of uses.

The most prized variety is however the Indian one which is the one used for our gift boxes.
